Gemini API: location not supported

The Gemini API is available only from the countries on Google’s official list; Russia, Belarus, China and Iran are not on it, so requests from there get 400 FAILED_PRECONDITION. The simplest route is to connect Gemini through API429: the same OpenAI-compatible format and one key.

Where the error comes from

Google’s error reference describes failed_precondition as an unmet prerequisite, such as disabled billing. Russia, Belarus, China and Iran are missing from the available-regions list; in Colab the check uses the location of the runtime itself.

Google does not quote “User location is not supported for the API use” in its docs — developers quote it on the forum. Together with FAILED_PRECONDITION it identifies the problem.

What to check

Whether billing is enabled for the Google Cloud project. Which region the request really leaves from: server IP, cloud region or CDN. The location of the runtime if the code runs in Colab or a cloud function.

How to connect Gemini anyway
